I’m Steve Loy. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana with my wife Amy. I spend my days shepherding two grown sons, an old but venerable Greyhound, and 700+ elementary-aged students as a public school art teacher. Oh, and I write. Most of what I write reflects my abiding interest in the history, culture and philosophy of man’s struggle to understand himself. I’ve tried to write the frivolous stuff; there’s money in there. I just don’t have it in me.
I draw my ideas and perspective from my long train of experiences. I grew up in the projects in Indianapolis (that’s low-income/high crime public housing, for all you pampered ones). I bulled my way through college as a means to escape poverty. I have traveled extensively, living in Europe for four years while serving in the United States Army as an armor officer on M60A3 and M1 tanks. I use all that experience -- in Journalism, art, history, and the military -- when I write stories for the worlds I create.
I haven’t exactly been lazy as a writer. I’ve published eight novels and a boatload of short stories and novellas, in various genres as differing as romance and military fiction. That doesn’t mean I’m unfocused, just that I don’t believe much in genres. Good literature is good literature, artificial descriptors be damned. I write what catches my imagination.
